Mystic Island Paradise
By Richard Hilton
The Big Island of Hawaii, is so far from home,
I say goodbye to the group and march into the unknown.
I breathe much harder than I thought I would.
My backpack has much more stuff than it should.
After walking for hours I find a good spot.
A burned down house in an abandoned lot.
After pitching my tent, I take a moment to pray.
Thank you so much for letting me stay.
I promise to respect the Earth and the trees.
I will take nothing with me, and there is nothing I will leave.
I walk a few yards to sit on the coast.
Black lava rock makes for a good host.
Water crashes into rocks then sprays a white mist
As if the ocean is singing and dancing in bliss.
I sit here for hours and watch with delight
As the sun sets behind palm trees and the day turns to night.
Wind in the trees strange noises come in waves
The dancing shadows force me to be brave.
I retreat to my tent to lay down in my nest,
I reflect on my journey before I get rest.
On the Big Island of Hawaii, that was only one day.
So full of life in every way.

Mr Ripplestone
By Richard Hilton
Clouds float by in the gentle breeze.
With singing birds and waving trees.
No expectations no where to go,
I sit and allow my thoughts to flow.
Endless choirs and constant chatter
It can be hard to search for what matters
I have some questions that are rather unclear
Who am I? and what am I doing here?
Under the plants and above the sky,
Surrounded by silence is the cryptic reply.
I throw a stone into a nearby pond
The ripples get bigger until they are gone.
Everything is connected like the rock I've just thrown,
I'm here to make waves, just like a Ripplestone.

Demons below and Angels above
By Richard Hilton
I know you're there, your everywhere.
I know you can hear me, cuz this is my prayer.
I know you're busy, I know you don't care,
But this pain inside, I just can not bear.
What I ask for, is insignificantly small,
For a God like you, so mighty and tall.
I beg of you to cut me free,
Let me die is my aching plea.
I promise that it's all I ask,
For you to commit one unholy task.
My request is in I feel a callous peace,
As I await the words from a funeral priest.
Many months passed and no such relief came,
But then again things were no longer the same.
This God had different plans for my fate,
An angel appeared who set my life strait.
This angel had wings that were as white as snow,
And beautiful hair right below her silver halo.
No one compared, no one came close,
I was like a bee who had just found a rose.
Until one day this God made an appearance,
I thanked him so much for his divine interference.
To my dismay he did not respond to me,
He spoke to the angel whose love made me free.
I told God about how much better things were,
And I no longer wanted my death to occur.
I yelled out to him that I wanted to stay,
Not heaven, nor hell could take me away!
At that God chuckled at such a notion,
As his master plan was already in motion.
The angel God spoke to with much concern
Had been wondering lost, and had to return.
I painfully watched as she floated away
Her love for me began to decay.
I turned my back and called out in pain,
As my feelings returned to a lonely domain.
At that time a demon appeared,
He told me that I had nothing to fear.
He said "good and bad are two sides of the a sword,"
"And if you follow me, your power would be restored."
So down I went through the doorway to hell,
Searching for a place for my misery to dwell.
Plans of revenge, and hedonistic desires,
As I threw my values into the fires.
Nothing matters, and no one cares.
It was still a life that I could not bear.
After a while I wanted to leave,
But it turns out I had been deceived.
The only way to go was further down,
Unless I could find a way to turn it around.
Life was meaningless, empty, and small.
A starting point to re-define and create all.
I started to believe in things that were good,
That this life of mine had been misunderstood.
I was in control of the way I had been.
The true source of happiness comes from within.
I reach out to the thought of the angel who cared.
I began to float up from the love we once shared.
The demons below grabbed at my feet,
As they saw my ascension as their defeat.
I called out for help as I reached up high,
An angel latched on with a loving reply.
This angel was different, she shared my despair.
She had no wings, no halo, and red wavy hair.
We pulled each other out of that hole,
And shared a connection deep in the soul.
I learned all I needed about life and love,
And of demons below and angels above.

The Spiritual Nomad
By Richard Hilton
As I open my eyes I'm aware of my bed.
I sit up and stretch as my awareness does spread.
At a new time and place this traveler has awoken.
In the bed of a truck parked out in the open.
I reflect on my dreams as I get ready to go,
Lessons from the cosmos as the mystery does grow.
This truck that I drive over concrete and stone,
Is mirrored by the journey within the unknown.
On the surface I'm a nomad, traveling great distance.
Underneath I'm a spirit, contemplating existence.
